Sam Bankman-Fried Discusses Collapse of FTX: Live Updates - The New York Times

The FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried said on Wednesday that his parents “bore no responsibility” for the downfall of his crypto exchange and the trading arm, Alameda Research, which he founded.

“Anyone close to me, including my parents and employees and co-workers who fought with the company to push forward, they were hurt by this,” Mr. Bankman-Fried said. “They bore no responsibility for that. I feel really bad about that. I feel really grateful for the support my parents are still giving me throughout all of this.”

Both of Mr. Bankman-Fried’s parents are Stanford Law School professors, who Mr. Bankman-Fried has said were influential in shaping his ethical framework. Their vocations also helped lend Mr. Bankman, 30, a further veneer of credibility with investors and others as he built his cryptocurrency empire.

Mr. Bankman-Fried was asked by Andrew Ross Sorkin at the DealBook Summit what he told his parents when his firm began to collapse this month. FTX was forced to file for bankruptcy after an avalanche of customer withdrawals created an $8 billion hole on the firm’s balance sheet. Mr. Bankman-Fried likened the customer exodus to a run on the bank.

“I think I called them up and said, ‘Hey guys, I think there might be a problem, like, it looks like Alameda’s position might be imploding here — there might be a liquidity issue,” he said.

When asked about the $300 million worth of real estate that FTX and Mr. Bankman-Fried’s parents reportedly bought in the Bahamas—including a $121 million house—he said he did not “know the details but that it was not intended to be their long-term property.”

“They may have stayed there while working with the company sometime over the last year,” he said of his parents.

As for other immediate personal fallout from the implosion of FTX, Mr. Bankman-Fried said he thought he had one working credit card and $100,000 left in the bank.

“I don’t have any hidden funds here,” he said.

Mr. Bankman-Fried also painted FTX as having a tame work culture, brushing aside a question from Mr. Sorkin about FTX staffers’ alleged drug use. “There were no wild parties. At our parties, we play board games. Twenty percent of people would have a quarter of a beer each, and the rest of us would not drink anything.”

Mr. Bankman-Fried said he had been prescribed “various things” to help with concentration.

“I think they help me focus a little bit,” he said. “I had been a lot more focused over the last year.”

And to the question of whether he lied to customers, investors and regulators: “I was as truthful as I’m knowledgeable to be,” he said.

Stock Market Rally Awaits Fed Chief Powell, Key Economic Data; Apple Extends Slide | Investor's Business Daily - Investor's Business Daily

Dow Jones futures were little changed overnight, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures, with Fed chief Jerome Powell and the start of key economic data on tap.

X

The stock market rally closed mixed Tuesday with Apple (AAPL) once again a drag on the major indexes, along with Amazon.com (AMZN) and Tesla (TSLA). Meanwhile, Apple's fellow Dow giants Boeing (BA), Chevron (CVX) and Goldman Sachs (GS) are near buy points.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and NetApp (NTAP) headlined earnings reports late Tuesday, with CrowdStrike (CRWD) and Workday (WDAY) kicking off big software reports this week.

HPE stock rose modestly in overnight trade after HPE earnings topped views. HP Enterprise stock, above its 200-day line, is working on a long cup base. NTAP stock plunged in extended action on weak NetApp revenue and guidance. WDAY stock jumped overnight on a Q3 beat and a $500 million buyback. CRWD stock dived despite beating Q3 views as subscriptions came in light and the cybersecurity firm implied a Q4 revenue miss.

On Wednesday morning, ADP will release its November employment estimate of private payrolls. The Labor Department will release job openings in the October JOLTS report. Job openings are watched closely by Fed chief Jerome Powell, who will speak Wednesday afternoon.

All that foreshadows the Fed's favorite inflation gauge, the PCE price index, on Thursday morning, along with the November jobs report on Friday, as well as several other notable economic releases.

Investors should be cautious about opening new positions until there's more clarity on the economy and Fed rate hike outlook. If anything they may want to be lightening positions in the very short term.

CVX stock is on IBD Leaderboard. BA stock is on SwingTrader.

Fed Chief Powell Speech

Fed Chief Jerome Powell will speak at the Brookings Institution at 1:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday. He's expected to reinforce expectations that the central bank will shift to a 50-basis-point rate hike on Dec. 14. Markets see a 67.5% chance of a half-point move, but still a decent chance of a fifth straight Fed rate hike of 75 basis points. But he'll also likely indicate that rate hikes will continue into 2023.

Whatever Powell says will quickly be overtaken by economic data. If inflation starts to show significant cooling and labor markets ease, even the most-hawkish Fed policymakers will favor slowing the pace of rate hikes and ending earlier than markets may expect. Hot price and employment data will stiffen the resolve of many Fed doves. Of course, the economic data in the coming days may show mixed results, or marginal improvement.

Dow Jones Futures Today

Dow Jones futures were little changed vs. fair value, along with S&P 500 futures. Nasdaq 100 futures were flat.

The 10-year Treasury yield fell 1 basis point to 3.74%.

Crude oil futures climbed 1%.

Remember that overnight action in Dow futures and elsewhere doesn't necessarily translate into actual trading in the next regular stock market session.

Stock Market Rally

After Monday's sharp selling, the stock market rally closed mixed Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed just above break-even in Tuesday's stock market trading. The S&P 500 index fell about 0.2%. The Nasdaq composite declined 0.6%. The small-cap Russell 2000 rose 0.3%.

Apple stock fell 2.1%, its third straight significant decline, as China Covid cases, lockdowns and protests weigh on the tech giant. On Tuesday, shares fell 2.6%, below their 50-day moving average. Above the 50-day line looms 200-day resistance for AAPL stock. Apple has seen unrest at a massive Foxconn iPhone assembly factory in China.

Amazon stock declined 1.6% and Tesla stock fell 1.1%, both retreating from near their 21-day lines. Both are relatively close to bear market lows.

U.S. crude oil prices climbed 2.4% to $79.62 a barrel. Intraday Monday, crude oil futures hit their lowest levels of the year.

The 10-year Treasury yield rose 5 basis points to 3.75%.

ETFs

Among the best ETFs, the Innovator IBD 50 ETF (FFTY) dipped 0.2%, while the Innovator IBD Breakout Opportunities ETF (BOUT) rose 0.5%. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) sank 0.8%. The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) fell 0.3%.

SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF (XME) gained 2.3% and the Global X U.S. Infrastructure Development ETF (PAVE) 0.1%. U.S. Global Jets ETF (JETS) ascended 1.8%. The Financial Select SPDR ETF (XLF) climbed 0.6%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) fell 0.25%.

Reflecting more-speculative story stocks, ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) edged down 0.5% and ARK Genomics ETF (ARKG) dipped 0.4%. Tesla stock is a major holding across Ark Invest's ETFs.

Five Best Chinese Stocks To Watch Now

Dow Stocks Near Buy Points

Boeing stock rose 2% to 175.32 on Tuesday, back above a 173.95 cup-base buy point, according to MarketSmith analysis. Shares have been trading tightly in light volume near the buy point after a big run-up on optimism for the aerospace giant. Analysts expect Boeing to return to profitability in 2023 after four years of losses. The recent pause in BA stock has the 21-day line catching up.

Chevron stock climbed 1.45% to 180.94, slightly below the 182.50 buy point and just above the 21-day line. CVX stock has been trading around that official buy point all month. An early entry near 167 on Oct. 19 was probably the safer bet initially. But with Chevron stock right at the 21-day and no longer extended from the 50-day, it's looking more interesting.

GS stock edged up 0.35% on Tuesday to 383.71. The investment bank has a 389.68 buy point from a 35%-deep cup-with-handle base going back to November 2021. Investors also could view the recent pause as a shelf just above the buy range from a bottoming base that Goldman stock cleared in early November. The 21-day moving average is close to catching up, while the 50-day line is starting to gain ground. The relative strength line is at a multiyear high reflecting GS stock's outperformance vs. the S&P 500.

Market Rally Analysis

The stock market rally is pulling back with key technical tests and economic data on tap, along with uncertainty over China's Covid policies.

The S&P 500 index is extending a pullback from just below the 200-day moving average, but still above its 21-day line. The Russell 2000, which dropped back below the 200-day and 21-day lines on Monday, nudged back above the 21-day.

The laggard Nasdaq fell below the 21-day line and is closing in on its 50-day line.

Apple stock, Tesla and other megacaps have been weighing on the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 index.

The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) is still above its 200-day moving average.

But don't exaggerate Apple's impact. Many leading stocks are testing or falling below buy points or round-tripping decent gains.

The silver lining is that the stock market isn't rallying into Fed speeches and important economic data. That could mean that markets could bounce if there are no negative surprises, with the possibility of bigger gains if upcoming headlines are positive.

But the market rally is going to do what it's going to do.

Time The Market With IBD's ETF Market Strategy

What To Do Now

With the markets pulling back there aren't a whole lot of stocks flashing buy signals. Investors probably should wait for Powell's speech and the economic data to roll in before making significant new buys. Investors may want to take at least some partial profits in winners, especially if the winning stocks are retreating back to buy points.

If the market rally revs higher soon, a large of number of stocks will look actionable. But a lot of interesting stocks today will start looking damaged if the major indexes fall significantly from here.

So investors need to stay engaged and flexible. Keep your watchlists up to date but have exit strategies for your holdings as well.

Alzheimer's drug lecanemab hailed as momentous breakthrough - BBC

Doctor looks at brain scansGetty Images

The first drug to slow the destruction of the brain in Alzheimer's has been heralded as momentous and historic.

The research breakthrough ends decades of failure and shows a new era of drugs to treat Alzheimer's - the most common form of dementia - is possible.

Yet the medicine, lecanemab, has only a small effect and its impact on people's daily lives is debated.

And the drug works in the early stages of the disease, so most would miss out without a revolution in spotting it.

Lecanemab attacks the sticky gunge - called beta amyloid - that builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer's.

For a medical field littered with duds, despair and disappointment, some see these trial results as a triumphant turning point.

Alzheimer's Research UK said the findings were "momentous".

One of the world's leading researchers behind the whole idea of targeting amyloid 30 years ago, Prof John Hardy, said it was "historic" and was optimistic "we're seeing the beginning of Alzheimer's therapies". Prof Tara Spires-Jones, from the University of Edinburgh, said the results were "a big deal because we've had a 100% failure rate for a long time".

Currently, people with Alzheimer's are given other drugs to help manage their symptoms, but none change the course of the disease.

Lecanemab is an antibody - like those the body makes to attack viruses or bacteria - that has been engineered to tell the immune system to clear amyloid from the brain.

Amyloid is a protein that clumps together in the spaces between neurons in the brain and forms distinctive plaques that are one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's.

Graphic showing what the lecanemab antibody does - attaching itself to the ameloid proteins that are more present in brains affected by Alzheimer's than healthy brains and then attracting the body's immune cells which break down the protein

The large-scale trial involved 1,795 volunteers with early stage Alzheimer's. Infusions of lecanemab were given every fortnight.

The results, presented at the Clinical Trials on Alzheimer's Disease conference in San Francisco and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, are not a miracle cure. The disease continued to rob people of their brain power, but that decline was slowed by around a quarter over the course of the 18 months of treatment.

The data is already being assessed by regulators in the US who will soon decide whether lecanemab can be approved for wider use. The developers - the pharmaceutical companies Eisai and Biogen - plan to begin the approval process in other countries next year.

Cheryl and David Essam

David Essam, who is 78 and from Kent in the UK, took part in the international trial.

His Alzheimer's meant he had to give up work as a joiner - he could no longer remember how to build a cabinet or use his tools. He now uses a digital watch as he can't tell time using a clock face.

"He's not the man he was, he needs help with most things, his memory in general is almost non-existent," said his wife Cheryl. But she said the trial had given the family hope.

David said: "If somebody can slow it [Alzheimer's] down and eventually stop it all together that would be brilliant, it's just a horrible nasty thing."

There are more than 55 million people in the world like David and the numbers with Alzheimer's disease are projected to exceed 139 million by 2050.

Will it make a difference?

There is debate among scientists and doctors about the "real world" impact of lecanemab.

The slower decline with the drug was noticed using ratings of a person's symptoms. It's an 18-point scale, ranging from normal through to severe dementia. Those getting the drug were 0.45 points better off.

Prof Spires-Jones said that was a "small effect" on the disease, but "even though it is not dramatic, I would take it".

Dr Susan Kohlhaas, from Alzheimer's Research UK, said it was a "modest effect... but it gives us a little bit of a foothold" and the next generation of drugs would be better.

There are also risks. Brain scans showed a risk of brain bleeds (17% of participants) and brain swelling (13%). Overall, 7% of people given the drug had to stop because of side effects.

A crucial question is what happens after the 18 months of the trial, and the answers are still speculation.

Dr Elizabeth Coulthard, who treats patients at North Bristol NHS Trust, says that people have, on average, six years of living independently once mild cognitive impairment starts.

Slow that decline by a quarter and it could equate to an extra 19 months of independent life, "but we don't know that yet", she says.

It is even scientifically plausible that the effectiveness could be greater in longer trials. "I don't think we can assume that this is it," says Dr Kohlhass.

The emergence of drugs that do alter the course of the disease asks big questions of whether the health service is ready to use them.

The drugs have to be given early in the disease before too much damage to the brain is done, whereas most people referred to memory services are in the later stages of the disease.

That requires people coming forward at the earliest signs of memory problems and doctors being able to send them for amyloid tests - either brain scans or spinal fluid analysis - to a determine if they have Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. At the moment only 1-2% of people with dementia have such tests.

"There's an enormous gulf between current service provision and what we need to do, to deliver disease modifying therapies," said Dr Coulthard.

She said that, currently, only those living near big medical centres or paying privately were likely to benefit.

Scientists also stressed that amyloid was only one part of the complex picture of Alzheimer's disease and should not become the sole focus of therapies.

The immune system and inflammation are heavily involved in the disease and another toxic protein called tau is the one that's found where brain cells are actually dying.

"That's where I would put my money," said Prof Spires-Jones.

She added: "I'm very excited we're on the cusp of understanding enough to get a hold of the problem and we should have something that will make a bigger difference in a decade or so."

Google sued by FTC and seven states over 'deceptive' Pixel 4 ads | Engadget - Engadget

You're not the only one wondering if that social media star really used a hot new phone. The Federal Trade Commission and seven states have sued Google and iHeartMedia for running allegedly "deceptive" Pixel 4 ads. Promos aired between 2019 and 2020 featured influencers that extolled the features of phones they reportedly didn't own — Google didn't even supply Pixels before most of the ads were recorded, officials said.

iHeartMedia and 11 other radio networks ran the Pixel 4 ads in ten large markets. They aired about 29,000 times. It's not clear how many people listened to the commercials.

The FTC aims to bar Google and iHeartMedia from making any future misleading claims about ownership. It also asks both companies to prove their compliance through reports. The states, including Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York and Texas, have also issued judgments demanding the firms pay $9.4 million in penalties.

Google spokesperson José Castañeda told Engadget in a statement that the company was "pleased" to address the situation and took advertising laws "seriously." He added that Google didn't see this as a lawsuit (it's technically a proposed FTC order and state judgments), and that the tech giant was only settling with six out of the seven states.

Misrepresentative phone ads are far from new. Huawei and Samsung have both been caught passing off stock DSLR photos as representative of their phone cameras. There's also a history of celebrities marketing phones it's not clear they use. Gal Gadot had to defend herself against claims she pitched Huawei phones while posting on Twitter from an iPhone, for instance (it was her publicist).

However, the accusations here are more serious. The FTC and participating states are contending that Google set out to use false testimonials. It had a "blatant disrespect" for truth-in-ads rules, according to FTC consumer protection director Samuel Levine. While the punishment is tiny compared to the antitrust penalties Google has faced so far, it could damage trust in the company's campaigns for newer Pixels and other hardware.

U.S. Crypto Exchange Kraken Settles With Treasury Dept. - The New York Times

The crypto exchange, which had been under investigation for violating U.S. sanctions, agreed to pay $360,000 to settle the allegations.

Kraken, a U.S. cryptocurrency exchange, agreed on Monday to pay more than $360,000 to the Treasury Department to settle accusations of sanctions violations involving virtual currency transactions by users in Iran.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said Kraken, the second-largest crypto exchange by volume in the United States, had agreed to a settlement for enabling nearly $1.7 million of transactions to individuals who appeared to be in Iran between October 2015 and June 2019. The United States imposed sanctions against Iran in 1979, prohibiting the export of goods or services to people or entities in the country.

In its statement, the office said the maximum civil monetary penalty for the violations could be more than $270 million but determined that the settlement would be much less because Kraken had reported the potential violations. In addition, the company agreed to spend an additional $100,000 on new compliance controls.

“Kraken failed to exercise due caution or care for its sanctions compliance obligations,” the statement said. It added that the company had user data that showed “transactions appear to have been conducted from Iran.”

In a statement, Marco Santori, Kraken’s chief legal officer, said the company was “pleased to have resolved this matter.”

“Even before entering into this resolution, Kraken had taken a series of steps to bolster our compliance measures,” he said. “This includes further strengthening control systems, expanding our compliance team and enhancing training and accountability.”

The settlement comes at a tumultuous moment for the crypto industry. This month, one of Kraken’s rivals, the Bahamas-based exchange FTX, collapsed after a run on deposits, sending the industry into one of the worst crises in its history. On Monday, another major crypto company, the lender BlockFi, filed for bankruptcy, citing the impact of FTX’s implosion.

Kraken, a private company valued at $11 billion that allows users to buy, sell or hold various cryptocurrencies, faced previous regulatory actions, including a $1.25 million penalty from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for offering a prohibited trading service. Jesse Powell, the company’s co-founder and chief executive, announced in September that he was stepping down after internal conflicts with employees and government investigations.

In July, The New York Times reported that the Office of Foreign Assets Control had been investigating Kraken since 2019. The previous month, Mr. Powell circulated a spreadsheet on the messaging system Slack that appeared to show that Kraken had serviced accounts in sanctioned countries such as Iran. He said the data came from residence information listed on “verified accounts.”

Last month, the Office of Foreign Assets Control announced its largest penalty for sanctions violations by a crypto company, fining cryptocurrency exchange Bittrex $24 million for allowing customers in Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria and Russian-occupied Crimea to make virtual currency transactions valued at more than a reported $263 million.

Elon Musk claims Apple has 'threatened to withhold' Twitter from its app store - CNN

New York CNN Business  —

Elon Musk on Monday claimed that Apple has “threatened” to pull Twitter from its iOS app store, a move that could be devastating to the company Musk just acquired for $44 billion.

“Apple (AAPL) has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won’t tell us why,” Musk said in one of several tweets Monday taking aim at Apple (AAPL) and its CEO for alleged moves that could undermine Twitter’s business.

In another tweet, Musk claimed that Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. “Do they hate free speech in America,” he said, in an apparent reference to his oft-stated desire to bolster his idea of free speech on the platform. “What’s going on here [Apple CEO Tim Cook]?” Musk added in a follow-up tweet. He also criticized Apple’s size, claimed it engages in “censorship,” and called out the 30% transaction fee Apple charges large app developers to be listed in its app store.

The tweetstorm highlights the tenuous relationship between Musk and Apple, which along with Google serves as the major gatekeepers for mobile applications. Long before taking over Twitter, the Tesla CEO said that when the car company was struggling, he considered selling the company to Apple, but that Cook refused to take a meeting with him.

Removal from Apple’s app store, or that of Google, would be detrimental to Twitter’s business, which is already struggling with a loss of advertisers following Musk’s takeover and a rocky initial attempt at expanding its subscription business.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Musk’s tweets. The company has previously shown it’s willing to remove apps from its app store over concerns about their ability to moderate harmful content or if they attempt to circumvent the cut Apple takes from in-app purchases and subscriptions.

In January 2021, Apple removed Parler, an app popular with conservatives, including some members of the far right, from its app store following the US Capitol attack over concerns about the platform’s ability to detect and moderate hate speech and incitement. Parler was returned to Apple’s app store three months later after updating its content moderation practices.

In its official app store review guidelines, Apple lists various safety parameters that apps must adhere to in order to be included in the store, including an ability to prevent “content that is offensive, insensitive, upsetting, intended to disgust, in exceptionally poor taste, or just plain creepy” such as hate speech, pornography and terrorism. “If you’re looking to shock and offend people, the App Store isn’t the right place for your app,” the guidelines state.

Various civil society groups, researchers and other industry watchers have raised concerns about Twitter’s ability to effectively moderate harmful content and maintain the platform’s safety following widespread layoffs and mass employee exits at the company. Musk has also claimed he wants to amplify “free speech” on the platform and has begun to restore some accounts that were previously banned or suspended for repeatedly violating Twitter’s rules. Musk himself has shared a conspiracy theory and several other controversial tweets since taking over as Twitter’s owner.

Musk, long a prolific and antagonistic tweeter, has not let up at all since taking over the company. And what it may have lost in revenue, he has claimed it has made up for in engagement. Part of the strategy appears to be relentlessly taking aim at enemies, either of him personally or of “free speech.”

In an interview with CBS earlier this month, Cook was asked whether there are any ways in which Twitter could change that would cause Apple to remove it from the app store. “They say that they’re going to continue to moderate and so … I count on them to do that,” Cook responded. “Because I don’t think that anybody really wants hate speech on their platform. So I’m counting on them to continue to do that.”

In an op-ed published in the New York Times last week, Twitter’s former head of trust and safety, Yoel Roth, who left the company earlier this month, suggested that Twitter had already begun to receive calls from app store operators following Musk’s takeover. Roth said the company’s failure to adhere to Google and Apple’s app store rules could be “catastrophic.”

And last weekend, the head of Apple’s app store, Phil Schiller, deleted his Twitter account.

While the state of Apple and Twitter’s relationship is unclear, the iPhone maker was running Black Friday ads on the platform as recently as last Thursday, according to posts viewed by CNN.

Many companies have pulled back on digital ad spending in recent months as the economy declined, and Twitter has likely always only been a small portion of Apple’s ad budget. Apple’s impact on Twitter, however, could be much more significant, including if Musk succeeds in shifting its core business to being more reliant on subscription revenue, and potentially has to pay a 30% cut to Apple.

In one tweet Monday, Musk asked his nearly 120 million followers if they know “Apple puts a secret 30% tax on everything you buy through their App Store?” In another tweet, he posted a picture of a highway exit: one lane headed toward “pay 30%,” the other pointed toward “go to war.” An old car labeled “Elon” skidded toward the latter.

10,500 Toddler Bottles and Cups Recalled Over Lead Poisoning Risk - The New York Times

Green Sprouts recalled the cups and bottles because the base can break off and expose a piece that contains lead.

A company has recalled about 10,500 bottles and cups for toddlers over lead poisoning concerns to children if a part of the product breaks off, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The base of these bottles and cups, manufactured by Green Sprouts, can come off and expose a solder dot that contains lead, posing a potential poison hazard to children, the commission said in a post dated Wednesday.

No injuries have been reported, the commission said, but the company is aware of seven incidents in which the base broke.

“Lead is toxic if ingested by young children, and can cause adverse health effects,” the commission said.

Consumers should take the bottles and cups away from children immediately and discard them, the commission said.

In a statement on its website, Green Sprouts said: “There is negligible risk to the health and safety of users. We are undertaking the costs and challenges of this recall voluntarily because our customers’ health and safety must come first.”

The solder dot, which contains lead, is supposed to be inaccessible under normal use, so this portion was not tested by a safety lab, the company said.

“As we approach the redesign of these products, whose benefits for keeping drinks cold safely have made them a popular choice for parents, we will ensure that lead is not used as a soldering material, no matter whether it would be accessible,” Green Sprouts said.

The plant-plastic and silicone lid and spout can be reused with other Green Sprouts cups and bottles, the company said.

The recalled products, which were sold in aqua, green, navy and pink, come in 6- and 8-ounce sizes. They were available at Buy Buy Baby and Whole Foods stores, and online at Amazon, Buy Buy Baby and Bed Bath & Beyond from January 2020 through September 2022, the commission said.

The commission said Green Sprouts is “contacting all known purchasers directly.” Those who bought the products can contact the company for refunds.

High levels of lead exposure in children can cause comas, convulsions and even death, according to the World Health Organization. Neurological and behavioral effects are believed to be irreversible.

“Children who survive severe lead poisoning may be left with intellectual disability and behavioral disorders,” a W.H.O. statement said.

Less than a month after Musk takeover, half of Twitter’s top advertisers have halted activity: report - The Hill

Half of Twitter’s top advertisers appear to have halted their activity on the social media platform, amid billionaire Elon Musk’s chaotic takeover of the company.

Fifty of Twitter’s leading 100 advertisers have stopped advertising on the site as of Nov. 21, according to a recent report from the left-leaning media watchdog Media Matters for America.

Several of the companies officially announced their decision not to advertise on Twitter, including Chevrolet, Chipotle, Ford, Jeep, Kyndryl, Merck and Novartis. The remaining companies were identified by Media Matters’ analysis as “quiet quitters,” those that previously advertised on the social media site but have stopped for a significant period.

Another seven companies appear to be slowing down their advertising to almost nothing, according to the Media Matters report.

The 50 companies that halted advertising on the platform accounted for more than $750 million in spending on Twitter in 2022 and almost $2 billion overall since 2020.

Musk finalized his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter late last month and has since led a chaotic transition at the company. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO said Twitter saw a “massive drop” in revenue in his first week, as advertisers pulled out over concerns about content moderation.

“Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists,” Musk said.

Musk laid off about half of Twitter’s workforce in his first week, claiming he had “no choice” amid the company’s poor financial condition. Several hundred more employees resigned in mid-November when Musk gave them an ultimatum — commit to a “hard core” work environment or leave.

The billionaire has also made changes to the social media platform itself, unsuccessfully attempting to roll out a paid subscription service for Twitter’s blue check verification and reinstating former President Trump’s account. Musk has also indicated that he plans to reinstate other suspended accounts in the near future.

Consumers spent a record $9.12 billion online shopping during Black Friday this year, according to Adobe, which tracks sales on retailers' websites.

Overall online sales for the day after Thanksgiving were up 2.3% year over year, and electronics were a major contributor, as online sales surged 221% over an average day in October, Adobe said. Toys were another popular category for shoppers, up 285%, as was exercise equipment, up 218%.

Many consumers embraced flexible payment plans on Black Friday as they continue to grapple with high prices and inflation. Buy Now Pay Later payments increased by 78% compared with the past week, beginning Nov. 19, and Buy Now Pay Later revenue is up 81% for the same period.

Some of this year's hottest items included gaming consoles, drones, Apple MacBooks, Dyson products and toys like Fortnite, Roblox, Bluey, Funko Pop! and Disney Encanto, according to the report.

Black Friday shoppers also broke a record for mobile orders, as 48% of online sales were made on smartphones, an increase from 44% last year.

The record-breaking spending comes on the heels of a strong day of Thanksgiving shopping, in which consumers shelled out an all-time high of $5.29 billion online, up 2.9% year-over-year. Typically, shoppers spend about $2 billion to $3 billion online in a day, according to Adobe.

For retailers, these numbers may be a promising indicator of the coming weeks. Early holiday forecasts have been muted, and Target, Macy'sNordstrom and other retailers reported a lull in sales in late October and early November. Consumer sentiment has also weakened in the past month as inflation hovers near four-decade highs.

Though Black Friday is over, e-commerce activity will remain strong through the weekend, according to Adobe's report. Adobe expects consumers to spend $4.52 billion on Saturday and $4.99 billion on Sunday, ahead of the year's biggest online shopping day, Cyber Monday.

This year, Cyber Monday is expected to drive $11.2 billion in spending, up 5.1% year-over-year, according to Adobe.
