The global toy, game and entertainment company didn’t specify the medical condition but pointed to Mr. Goldner’s disclosure in August 2020 that he was undergoing continued treatment that might cause hair loss. He was treated for prostate cancer in 2014.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to take a medical leave to focus on my health,” Mr. Goldner said.

The leave is effective immediately, Hasbro said Sunday.

Rich Stoddart, previously lead independent director of Hasbro’s board, will take over as interim CEO.

Mr. Goldner joined Hasbro in 2000 and became CEO in 2008. The share price has more than tripled since he took charge.

In July, the Pawtucket, R.I.-based company reported a 54% rise in second-quarter revenue, thanks to growth in its Wizards of the Coast and digital-gaming segment. Like many companies, it has been working to manage pandemic-driven rises in freight and input costs, as well as shipping bottlenecks.

The company will report third-quarter earnings Oct. 26.

Hasbro said that its board of directors has reappointed Edward Philip as lead independent director, and Tracy Leinbach to chair the board’s Nominating, Governance and Social Responsibility Committee.
