The car maker said it would invest ¥2 trillion, equivalent to $17.6 billion, in battery technology.

The company had previously said it would introduce 15 battery EV models by 2025.

Toyota’s president, Akio Toyoda, said the car maker wanted to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions as much as possible and as quickly as possible.

Previously, Mr. Toyoda has expressed skepticism about the car industry’s move toward battery EVs. He said the vehicles aren’t necessarily environmentally friendly if the electricity they use comes from fossil fuels.
